Pyrois was one of the flaming horses of Helios, god of the Sun. The god Helios was said to personify the Sun. Each day he rode his great flaming chariot from one side of the sky to the other, before diving into the ocean and traveling back to where he started to repeat the process. His golden chariot is drawn by four flaming horses. According to the poet Ovid, the horses are called Pyrois, Aeos, Aethon, and Phlegon. The poet Homer named them Abraxas and Therbeeo. Eumelus of Corinth named them Eous, Aethiops, Bronte, and Sterope. Pyrois and the rest of the horses of Helios belonged to the Hippoi Athanatoi, which were the immortal horses of the gods. Pyrois means “The Fiery One”.
